"The biggest mistake I made was believing that if I cast a beautiful net, I'd catch only beautiful things."
- Prairie Johnson in New Colossus
Prairie Johnson, born Nina Azarova
History[]
Background[]
Prairie Johnson was born Nina Azarova in 1987 in Russia. Her father was a wealthy man and involved with the Voi. As a child she had a recurring nightmare that she was drowning and when she woke up her nose would bleed. One day her school bus ran off a bridge and she nearly drowned, just like in her dream. Her incident was a Near Death Experience and she met an entity who left her blind. After this, she went to America to escape from the Voi who presumably are responsible for the bus accident which left the children of many aristocrats dead. After the death of her father she was removed from her school for the blind and lived with her aunt who ran a whore house. after a while the Johnsons came to adopt a baby, but Nancy discovered her and adopted her from the house and gave her the name Prairie. Prairie continued to have prophetic dreams and sleepwalked, and the Johnsons noticed and promptly sent her to a psychiatrist, who medicated her.
At a certain point she realized her dreams were telling her to go to the Statue of Liberty to meet her father so she ran away from home to do so. However when she got there she did not meet her father and she spent time in the subway playing violin. A man (Hap) comes across her and recognizes the song as Russian and spends time with her, earning her trust. She reveals to him that she had an NDE and he invites her to participate in a study on NDE survivors, but he actually kidnaps her and holds her captive, running tests on her and other NDE survivors for 7 years before she escapes.

Hap and OA meet at the train station in New York near the Statue of Liberty after Hap is drawn towards the sounds of her playing the violin, which she is playing in the hopes of finding her father. Upon first meeting, Hap treats her extremely kindly, taking her to a restaurant where he tells her about his studies. He later betrays her, locking her in a cell in his remote research facility.
- Dr. Percy (Dimension 2)
Dr. Percy and OA meet in the second dimension, where OA is a patient in a mental facility run by Dr. Percy. He has all of his memories of his first dimension's life, and recognizes OA immediately.
- Homer Roberts (Dimension 1)
Homer and OA (Aka Prairie) have a complicated relationship. They met when OA was taken to the underground testing facility, where they had adjacent cells. Over time, they fell in love. When the characters were separated by dimensions, OA continued to search for him.
- Dr. Roberts (Dimension 2)
Dr. Roberts first meets Prairie / The OA in the second dimension, where he is a psychologist working under Dr. Percy. OA believes him to be her Homer, but he unfortunately doesn't have Homer's memories. Since OA is his patient, he doesn't believe what she tells him about Dr. Percy and the other "Angels."
- Alfonso Sosa (Dimension 1)
Alfonso first meets Prairie when she visits a local teen hangout spot (The Unfinished House) looking for WiFi. He later joins the group of individuals that listen to OA's story, and becomes invested in her well-being. He is the only one to truly investigate Prarie's life to disprove her, even breaking into her house to find evidence.
- Steve Winchell (Dimension 1)
Steve and OA have a good relationship built on trust. Steve and OA meet at The Unfinished House, where the OA is walking down the street and Steve is on the roof of the house. They meet again inside the house, when Steve's dog attacks OA. Later, they make a deal to help one another. OA pretends to be Steve's step mother, and Steve gives her WiFi to find Homer. Steve is OA's strongest supporter when listening to her story and defending her against the others.
- Betty Broderick-Allen (Dimension 1)
OA and Betty are close, in experience and loss. Betty and OA meet when OA is portraying Steve Winchell's step mother at a parent-teacher meeting. OA reaches out to Betty about her recently passed brother, and in turn Betty listens to her story when the group gathers at The Unfinished House.
- Buck Vu (Dimension 1)
Buck's relationship with the OA is that of closeness and trust. Even when everyone thinks she's bonkers in Part I, Buck holds his faith throughout the trials testing it. Ian Alexander, the legend himself, described this relationship as Buck being "the first to believe, and the last to let go." The OA is a trans ally, correcting people for using the wrong name and pronouns in regards to Buck.
- Jesse Mills (Dimension 1)
Jesse is one of "The Boys" that listens to OA's story. They first meet at The Unfinished House.
